English at Holly Spring Primary

All at Holly Spring Primary School we recognise the central importance of English, as a subject in its own right and as the most cohesive area of learning. Gaining and using skills in language not only affects the child’s progress in school, but also has a profound influence upon the course of his or her whole life. We encourage children to speak, listen, read and write for a range of purposes so using language to learn and communicate ideas, views and feelings.

Our aims for our teaching and learning within English are to provide all children the opportunity to:

  • Foster a lifelong enthusiasm and love of reading and writing
  • Provide opportunities for children to become confident, competent and expressive users of the language with a developing knowledge of how it works
  • Provide opportunities for children to be reflective users of language, able to analyse and evaluate features of language
  • Develop the fundamental skills of language as a means of communication, thus giving access to the rest of the curriculum and providing a vital key for future learning
  • To equip children with the necessary spelling strategies and rules to help them spell accurately
  • To increase the children’s ability to improve the planning, drafting and editing of their written work
  • To enable children to write with accuracy and meaning, writing in narrative or non-fiction forms
  • To apply these skills with confidence across all National Curriculum subjects

At Holly Spring Primary we teach writing using Talk for Writing a nationally recognised framework for teaching children to write. We use Letters and Sounds as our main phonics scheme, complimented by the Jolly Phonics actions and LCP schemes of work and use a handwriting programme called Letterjoin for handwriting lessons and interventions. Grammar and Punctuation lessons are taught discretley through phonic teaching and applied though the Talk for Writing and phonic lesson process.
