Maths at Holly Spring Primary School
At Holly Spring we aim to develop and nurture our children so that they become confident mathematicians for the future. We want them to know and understand the purpose, relevance and importance of mathematics in everyday life. We want every child to be confident in using numbers in order for them to make a valued contribution for themselves, the wider community and the world around them.
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work and are well resourced with concrete apparatus including Numicon and Diennes in every classroom. Lessons are built on a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to ensure secure foundations and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Pupils are able to see numbers and concepts in a variety of representations. Key concepts are revisted through regular arithmetic practice outside of the maths lesson.
The National Curriculum for maths aims to ensure that pupils become fluent with the fundamentals of maths, reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and solve problems by applying their mathematical knowledge. More information about that is below:
- Fluency: Being able to recall facts and solve calculations with speed.
- Reasoning: Being able to explain the steps in a process, how an answer was found or explain mistakes or misconceptions in a process.
- Problem solving: Being able to solve complex problems that require a recall of facts, reasoning and logical thinking.
