Design and Technology Intent Statement
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works"
– Steve Jobs
Design and Technology uses curiosity to examine how things work as well as encouraging children to think creatively to solve problems and make products even better.
At holly Spring we feel it is important to expose pupils to a wide range of products that can help them use their imagination and understand the purpose behind such products. Through this children are given opportunities to reflect, evaluate and critique their own work and the work of other. This allow children to explore how products can be developed or adapted for different users. Children need a hands on approach that also gives access to other areas of the curriculum such as Mathematics, Science and History. Skills and techniques developed through Design and Technology are of great importance in our ever changing technological world to ensure that children are equipped for the next staged in their lives.
At Holly Spring, our curriculum drivers, knowledge, aspiration and experience, are fully embedded in our Design and Technology curriculum. Within these values we aim to:
Knowledge:
- Children are given a variety of real life products to explore in great detail’ expanding their knowledge of how they look and work’ allowing children to evaluate products against their target market and purpose.
- Children will develop an understanding of how to apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Aspiration:
- Through evaluation of past and present design children will foster a deeper understanding of how innovative, purposeful design can improve daily life for its users.
Experience:
- Improve children’s confidence, enabling them to understand the skills involved in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products.
- Encourage children to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable members of Holly Spring.
