Geography Intent Statement
"Geography is the tapestry that weaves the world together"
Gil Grosvenor
At Holly Spring Primary School, we endeavour to create young geographers from our pupils. Additionally, we aim to ensure that all of our learners leave with an appreciation of human geography, physical geography and an awareness of the world and their local area. We strive to make sure that every child has a love for geography and the environment that they will co-exist with for the rest of their lives.
Our curriculum is deliberately aspirational, with a focus on ensuring every child could undertake a future career in geographical areas. Through our planned units, we aim to foster several key ideas in our pupils. Firstly, we aim to equip all children with an understanding of the places and people that surround them. Secondly, through our carefully crafted topics, we have ensured that all learners develop: an understanding of the globe, major features and resources that are prevalent across the Earth and the cultures that populate it. Additionally, we create a sense of curiosity around the wider world and discuss how various elements change over time as well as with the changing conditions of our planet.
Ultimately, Geography is an explorative and investigative subject and we endeavour to make it as interactive and enriching as possible. Through practical activities and a clearly sequenced progression of skills and knowledge, we are ensuring every child can aspire to their highest potential.
Through our Holly Spring curriculum drivers, we aim to:
Knowledge:
- Gain a knowledge of difference countries across the world and understand their characteristics.
- Promote children’s vocabulary and understanding of key facts.
- Understand key concepts, regarding human and physical geography.
- To give all children the ability to answer complex questions and ask their own regarding their local area.
Aspiration:
- Prepare children for the next step in their geography career, as the current offer gives every child the ability to take geography to university level.
Experiences:
- Offer children the chance to create and answer their own fieldwork questions, giving them the geographical skills needed to investigate.
- Enrich their enjoyment, knowledge and enquiry skills through the use of trips, tools and workshops.
