Music Intent Statement
"Where words fail, music speaks"
– Hans Christian Anderson
Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It transcends different cultures, abilities and generations – stimulating responses on both emotional and intellectual levels. It allows opportunity for personal expression and plays an important part in the personal development of an individual.
At Holly Spring, we aim to inspire the musician within all children. By engaging children in musical experiences, we offer our children opportunities to develop skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other curriculum areas as well as developing life skills such as listening, the ability to concentrate, creativity, self-confidence and a sensitivity towards others and the environment.
Singing is a huge part of life in Holly Spring Primary School, enriching our curriculum and strengthening our community as a large school. Each half term, all children take part in Sing Up, in which a theme is chosen and all year groups perform a song to other members of the school community. This not only introduces our children to a range of different types of music from different eras but also gives all pupils, from EYFS to Year 6, the opportunity to perform as a part of an ensemble. We also have an after-school club choir, which runs all year for children in Years 2-6, allowing those who choose to to perform additional songs in our Sing Up performances.
At Holly Spring, our curriculum drivers, knowledge, aspiration and experience, are fully embedded in our music curriculum. Within these values we aim to:
Knowledge:
- Build the children’s understanding and skills in music through our curriculum choices and lesson structure
- Provide the opportunity to use a range of instruments, including the specific instruction of a school chosen instrument in Year 5 and the opportunity to be in a band through our partnership with IRock
- Develop improvisation and composition skills through various forms such as simple notation
Aspiration:
- Provide the opportunity to foster instrumental flare and use this as a form of expression
- Inform the children of future career opportunities based in music
Experience:
- Improve children’s confidence, enabling them to take part in performances
- Encourage children to form opinions about their tastes in music, alongside an awareness of different styles and traditions from different times and places
