PSHE intent Statement
"Be the change you want to see in the world"
-Mahatma Ghandi
At Holly Spring Primary School, we recognise that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a crucial component of our students' learning journey. Our students will be provided with the opportunity to learn within each year group about British values, how to maintain their wellbeing, and sex and relationship education. They will have the chance to grow spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally, as well as to consider their own held viewpoints. Our pupils will revisit the above themes as they advance through the school; giving them the chance to draw on their existing knowledge and then build upon it with progressively more complicated concepts for their ages.
In addition to giving our students an inclusive understanding of their identity and role within their community, we want them to be able to use that knowledge to engage in respectful and empathetic conversations with others about their life experiences, which will help them to become informed, contributing members of our diverse society.
At Holly Spring, our curriculum drivers, knowledge, aspiration and experience, are fully embedded within our PSHE curriculum. Within these values we aim to:
Knowledge:
- Foster a sense of community and British values through discussion, expert talks and experiences.
- Promote children’s vocabulary and comprehension of key themes.
- Give all children the ability to evaluate complex issues, develop and appreciate their own and alternative viewpoints with scaffolded discussion.
- Build robust emotional literacy through learnt strategies and shared experiences.
- Gain knowledge about the internet's hazards through talks from experts, assemblies and discussions.
Aspiration:
- To prepare children to engage with different communities and appreciate diverse cultures
- To utilise strategies to keep them safe physically, mentally and in cyberspace.
- To thrive in the wider world with the ability to make independent decisions that would contribute to their mental and physical wellbeing
Experience:
- Improve children’s cultural capital, endeavouring to broadening their experiences of their community and the wider world.
- Enrich their enjoyment and engagement with others through their development of questioning and engaging with artefacts, trips and workshops.
- Develop their emotional literacy through shared discussion and role-playing learnt strategies.
